In November 2023, I started volunteering with the Glee Kids Troupe (GKT), a local non-profit DFW-based youth volunteer organization.
We go to senior nursing homes, put on talent performances, interact and talk with the seniors. Our job is to bring them joy and warmth to help them feel less lonely! We try our best to cheer them up with our performances and fun activities.
When I started, GKT only had around ten members and we served only one senior nursing home, but we worked hard together, and now we have over fifty members! With more of us helping out, we now visit four senior nursing homes and make the seniors feel loved.
To help our group run smoothly, we started a Service Advisory Committee in January 2024. In November 2024, all the other members voted for me to become a member of the Service Advisory Committee! In this big role, it is my responsibility to help keep track of everyone’s volunteer hours, maintain the volunteer records, assist members apply for awards, and prepare attendance reports to present to the committee. This role helps me practice important organizing and communication skills, but the best part is learning how to be a better helper to others. I’m thankful for this opportunity and have brought in four new members! We are all working hard together to support the senior community and the growth of GKT.
GKT has taught me a lot about what it means to give back. It helped me learn how to be a better person, speak more clearly to people, feel more confident when I perform, and how to start making a positive impact in my community. I am really grateful for GKT and hope to keep serving others for a long time in the communities around me!
